The sun was out when we reached to the small town near home. The air was moist and I could already feel the sunray burning my skin. The people were up and working outside. We passed through some small stores and waved at some workers. The town we live in is pretty small so pretty much, everyone was a friend. We finally arrived home around 9:30 am.
“Guess Dad’s awake?” Jeremy asked, turning off the engine.
“He could be.” I answered, grabbing my backpack and got out of the truck. Jeremy got out too and locked the doors with his car keys.
We walked up to the front porch and opened the door. How sweet, our parents even left the door unlocked for us. We entered inside.
“Y’all had fun?” a voice yelled from the kitchen. It was dad.
“Yep.” I answered while Jeremy went up the stairs. Dad entered the living room where I was with a blue robe and a coffee mug in his hands. He sat down on the sofa, facing directly at me. He smiled and took a slip of his coffee.
“You knew we were going out?” I asked, sitting next to him. Dad didn’t look at me, only smiled and nodded.
“We woke you up, didn’t we?” I finally asked, feeling a little guilty. Dad laughed and looked over at me,
“You know I’m a light sleeper.”
“Oh right. I forgot.”
“You need to take a shower though. We’re going to meet your mother’s sister and her family at the Red Lobster for your Aunt Glenn’s birthday around twelve o’clock.”
“Kay.” I didn’t want to admit or say anything else since I did forget about my aunt’s birthday.
We don’t really see my mother’s sister family quite often since they live the other side of town. Her husband is a doctor while she’s a nurse. I can’t really go into much detail about them since I hardy see or know them. It was pretty odd though that we were going to a nice restaurant and spend good amount of money for Aunt Glenn’s birthday. I guess she is really special to Mom. After all, she is her only sister.
I left the living room and headed up the stairs. I walked into the narrow hallways, overhearing water running in the bathroom. It didn’t take long for me to guess it was Jeremy in there. I walked by and passed my parents’ bedroom. The door was opened and I decided to check on Mom. I poked my head in and found her sitting on the bed, reading her Kindle. She looked up and smiled, taking off her reading glasses and bushed her frizzy blond bang to the side.
“You boys went out again, eh?” She asked, putting down the Kindle.
“Yes...” I answered, entering the room.
“You guys had fun?”
“Yes…”
“What’s the matter?”
“Nothing.”
“Nothing?”
“Yup. Nothing.”
“Hm, okay then.” Mom put her reading glasses back on and picked up the Kindle and continued reading whatever she left off. I watched her and turned my back at her, exiting the bedroom. I couldn’t tell her what I may have seen at the park, but again, I tried to shrug it off. There was something telling me that I shouldn’t.
I walked to the door that was at the end of the hallways and entered the small messy room. I tossed my backpack onto my standard size bed, which was on left side. I sat down at the end of my bed and looked ahead at a wall that was covered entirely of numerous sketches that you couldn’t even see the color of my blue-grey wall. I walked over to right side of the room where my desk was. I reached for the black sketchbook and looked at one of the sketches that Johnny saw earlier this morning. The pen sketch of a skinny emo kid with shorts and a tight t-shirt, holding a simple daisy toward a girl in mid-size ruffle skirt and a tank top. I glanced down at the girl’s high heels and noticed I’ve messed up one of her foot. Her big toe was on the wrong end of her left foot. I looked back up at the sketch of a girl and admired her face, which I drew from memory. Her lovely, perfection oval face along her big almond-shape eyes and cute button nose. My finger followed the line of her long, loosely curls hair that reached to middle of her back. I then looked at her small, pump up lips and saw pleased she looked when she received from a shy guy. I closed my eyes and pictured the sketch of a girl I drew into a real human being. The kind of clothes she wears suited her long, curvy pear-shape body and her lovely face features. The way that her bright, green eyes glittered and how her dimple appears when she smiles or laughs. She touched her long, silky golden brown hair, causing her light skin glows. She was beautiful indeed. My heart fluttered every time I hear her laugh or giggle, and how it warmed my heart when she blush. She doesn’t blush often, but when she does, her cheeks turn to pinkish red.
I remembered the day when I first laid my eyes on her and that was when it was first day of my sophomore year. I was sitting alone in math class along other students, whose were chatting in groups. I believed I was drawing something in my agenda until I saw someone standing in the corner of my eyes. I looked on my right, and there she was. She was shy, quiet girl and how she held onto her books tightly. She looked around and looked at me. Our eyes met. That was moment when I knew I was in love. She smiled a little while I returned one back at her. She then looked ahead and smiled bigger, revealing dimples. She walked past me, leaving the sweet, heavenly, rose scent behind and sat with her friends.
Her name was Katherine. Katherine Newbury.
I opened my eyes and looked down, looking the girl in the sketch once again. Then, I saw a group of boys in jock jackets and well-groomed hair and shaved, pointed at the couple, snickering. My heart sank a little. This picture I drew brought me back to drastic memory. It was Valentine’s Day, the very day I was planning on asking Katherine out, but one of the popular guys, named Devin Herman, beat me. He won her over and I didn’t even get a chance to ask her.
I loathed Devin. He used to bully me back in middle school, calling me “Squirt” since I was the littlest student in most of my classes. His friends would join him as they enjoyed taunting me. Eventually, that ended when we were freshmen in high school since we didn’t have class together and hardly see each other in the hallways. However, he seem to get away, silently and sneaky. No taunting or making fun of me, only a visional signs of telling me that I’m a “loser” and no girls would want to date me. He obviously knew I have a crush on Katherine since one of his friends was in the same math class. Anyway, she probably has forgotten about me already. I wondered how she’s doing though. Plus, I haven’t recall seeing her hanging out with Devin though. Maybe this is my chance!
I closed the sketchbook and placed it in the top drawer. I turned around and almost screamed, but jumped… a little after discovering Jeremy standing in the doorway, watching me. He shook his head, trying not to laugh, “Sorry bro, didn’t mean to frighten you.”
“W-what are you talkin’ about? You didn’t scare me.” I lied.
“Whatever. Say, what were you looking at?”
“Some sketch I drew.” I walked past my brother. Jeremy followed me. I stopped while Jeremy did the same. I turned around and glared at him, “What? Why are you following me?”
Jeremy gave me a long look without blinking. I waited for his respond patiently or at least I tried show I was. Jeremy licked his lips and glanced away, saying in an soft tone, “I dunno, just bored.”
I sighed and gave him a gently push on the shoulder,
“Whatever bro, I gotta get ready.” I walked into the bathroom and shut the door behind me.
“Guess Dad’s awake?” Jeremy asked, turning off the engine.
